Common questions

Before you trust your host's backups.

The questions we hear most often from teams shopping for managed backups — leading with the obvious one: "don't I already have backups?"

Honest answer: most basic host backups have three failure modes that show up at the worst possible moment.
Same-server storage. Many shared hosts store backups on the same server as your live data. If the server dies, the backups die with it. Apaxon stores backups offsite in UK S3-compatible storage — physically separate from your origin.
Never tested.Host backups typically aren't restore-tested. You only discover they're broken when you actually need them. We run monthly restore drills on every backed-up site and confirm in writing.
Short retention.Basic host backups usually keep 3–7 days. If you discover corruption a week later — database tables silently broken, customer data overwritten by a buggy plugin — there's nothing to roll back to. Our retention starts at 7 days and goes to 90.
Keep your host's backups. They're free, and a second copy never hurts. But for anything where a lost site costs you real money or trust, an offsite, tested, longer-retention backup is doing different work.
Files, databases, email directories, server configurations, and TLS certificates. Roughly:
Files — everything in your web root (source code, themes, uploads, plugins) plus any custom application paths you specify.
Databases — full SQL dumps of MySQL and PostgreSQL. Consistent snapshots, so no half-committed transactions.
Email — mail directories on Pro and Business tiers. Not included on Essential — speak to us if you need email-only backups separately.
Server configs — nginx, Apache, .htaccess, DNS records, cron jobs. Small in size, absolutely vital for fast recovery.
TLS certificates — certs and private keys. So restored sites come back with HTTPS already configured, not needing a fresh cert issuance.

Restore time depends on what you're restoring and which tier you're on.
File-level restores (specific files or folders): typically under 5 minutes regardless of tier. Self-service via dashboard on Pro and Business.
Full-site restores (everything for one site): 30–90 seconds for the 2 GB benchmark shown in Process, scaling roughly linearly with size. A 20 GB site is more like 8–12 minutes.
Bare-metal recovery (rebuilding a destroyed server from scratch): hours, not minutes, coordinated with us directly. Business tier has a same-day SLA on this.
Tier-specific response SLAs: Essential next business day, Pro within 8 hours, Business same-day.
These are commitments for us to be working on it. The technical restore time itself is usually faster — the SLA covers the worst case if we're backed up with other work.
This is exactly what the offsite, encrypted-at-rest model is built for.
Total server destruction. Your backups live in UK S3-compatible storage, physically separated from your origin host. If your server is destroyed by fire, theft, hardware failure, or your hosting provider collapsing, the backups are unaffected. We rebuild onto a new server of your choice.
Ransomware. The relevant property is that our backups are immutable within their retention window— once written, they can't be modified or deleted by an attacker who's compromised your live server. Even if ransomware encrypts your live files, the offsite backups stay clean. Restore from a snapshot taken before the attack.
The other side of ransomware.Don't restore to the same compromised server. Provision a fresh server (we'll help), restore there, then investigate how the original was breached before pointing DNS back. Restoring onto a compromised host just gives the attacker a fresh copy of your data.
Bare-metal recovery from total loss is included on all tiers. Business tier has the same-day SLA on response.
All backup storage is in the UK. We use UK-region S3-compatible object storage (we can name the provider under NDA if required for due diligence).
Encryption. AES-256 at rest (encrypted on disk), TLS 1.3 in transit. Encryption keys are managed by us; we can support customer-managed keys on Business tier as an enterprise add-on.
Data residency. Your backup data does not leave the UK. No transfers to AWS US, no replication to EU regions. This is the relevant property for UK GDPR and for customers doing business in regulated industries.
Access. Only Apaxon staff with operational need can access backup metadata. The encryption-at-rest model means even Apaxon staff cannot read backup contents without keys held in our key management system.
Documentation. We can provide a Data Processing Addendum (DPA) for your GDPR compliance records. Speak to us if you need one for procurement.
Yes — and we encourage it.
Every tier includes the ability to request a test restore to a staging environment. This puts a recent snapshot onto a separate hostname (something like restore-test.your-domain.co.uk) without touching your live site. You can browse it, log in, check the data, and confirm it's the working copy you expected.
On Pro and Business, test restores are self-service via the dashboard. On Essential, request one by email and we set it up within one business day.
We also run our own restore tests monthly on every backup we hold — randomly selected, full restore attempted, written confirmation logged. Request the most recent test log for your account at any time.
The whole point of paying for managed backups instead of relying on your host's defaults is that you can actually verify the restore works. We make that verification easy.
